Nutritionists across the globe will tell you that, out of the 5 essential food groups of grain, vegetables, fruits, dairy and meat, children must ensure least three of these make up every meal. It is also common knowledge amongst dieticians that, for a male adult, the same applies, but due to the physical and mental responsibilities of growing beards, watching sport, breaking shit, trying to fix shit, the 3 of 5 must be more specific and tailored. These 3 food essentials are; Pickles, Pigs and Whiskey.
So, it goes without saying that the next recipe book, and the only book we’ll ever need in The Coolector HQ kitchen, is Chef John Currence’s Pickles, Pigs & Whiskey: Recipes from My Three Favorite Food Groups and Then Some. Chef Currence gives you 130 recipes, not just of food, but food to reflect his life, loves and experiences. A record of Southern American gastronomy from its heart, one which is shown to beat far and wide; a reflection of its popularity and respect across the globe.
Delivered by 10 fantastic chapters of cooking techniques, such as Pickling/Canning, Roasting/Braising, Brining/Smoking, you’ll be conjuring jars of fancies, treats to tempt, dips to dunk, dishes to delight, in only a way a man should. Accompanied with a complementary personal tale, a spotify.com track, and 100 colour photos – the ensemble is charmingly personal, genuine and above all, mouth watering!
So, having this book, what are the crew of The Coolector excitedly awaiting to eat from John’s southern library? We like the sound of Steen’s Syrup Braised Pork Belly, then again, we could see off some Deep South ‘Ramen’ with Fried Poached Eggs, but what about, Stewed Okra and Tomatoes, and we’ll have to save some room for the Banana Walnut Layer Cake with Vanilla Cream Cheese Icing. We are spoilt for choice and we cant wait to tuck in!!
Happy eating Y’all
