Wearable Surrealism: D1 Milano x Peter Tarka: The Impossible Watch

We love a good watch collaboration here at The Coolector, but it is exceptionally rare to see a timepiece that completely shatters the boundaries between digital art and physical industrial design.

Milanese watchmaker D1 Milano has teamed up with world-renowned digital artist Peter Tarka to turn a piece of pure, gravity-defying 3D imagination into a tangible everyday accessory.

Dubbed the D1 Milano x Peter Tarka: The Impossible Watch, this mind-bending project has officially launched on Kickstarter, with early-bird backer tiers starting at a very accessible $379.

It effectively takes an “impossible” digital landscape and re-engineers it to live comfortably on your wrist.

From Digital Rendering to Physical Reality

Peter Tarka is globally celebrated for his immersive, colorful 3D compositions where shapes behave like architecture and everyday objects become beautifully surreal. In his digital realm, gravity, weight, and manufacturing limits simply do not exist.

When D1 Milano set out to translate his visual language into a watch, they refused to just slap an artist’s name on a conventional dial. Instead, they embarked on a months-long co-design process to make his sculptural, retro-futuristic concept physically achievable.

* Material Science: Lightweight, anodized aerospace-grade Aluminum
* Weight Efficiency: 50% lighter than standard stainless steel equivalents
* Time Display: Three mechanical rotating discs with a secondary digital screen
* Calendar Function: Seven-dot sequential weekday indicator

Tarka’s original digital vision imagined the watch in solid stainless steel. However, once the physical prototypes materialized, the bold, sculptural architecture of the case and integrated bracelet proved far too heavy for daily comfort.

Pivotally, the product development team re-engineered the entire watch using high-grade aluminum. This reduced the overall weight by an incredible 50% and unlocked a vivid canvas for rich, anodized color finishes that perfectly mirror Tarka’s artistic universe.

Telling Time Through Playful Geometry

The face of The Impossible Watch completely reimagines traditional horology. In place of standard hands and markers, the watch utilizes three dedicated, independent rotating discs to track the hours and minutes.

Once the crown is set, the kinetic display automatically glides to present the time in a constantly shifting layout of abstract geometry.

“The playful mechanics don’t stop at hours and minutes. A row of seven small weekday dots gradually illuminates as the week progresses. One dot represents Monday, two indicate Tuesday, and by the time all seven dots light up, you know you’ve hit Sunday.”

To balance this highly expressive, sculptural presentation with everyday practicality, the design team seamlessly integrated a clear digital screen into the layout.

This duplicates the essential timing information, giving the wearer an instant numerical readout when efficiency is required, without compromising the watch’s avant-garde aesthetic.

A Design Pedigree Over a Decade in the Making

While the aesthetics of this launch are wild and experimental, the manufacturing backing it is rock-solid. Founded in Milan in 2013, D1 Milano has been crafting design-led timepieces for 13 years, capturing international acclaim from the likes of GQ, Esquire, and Forbes.
