A Masterclass In Restomod Engineering: The 1968 Ford Mustang Custom Fastback

Here at The Coolector, we spend an inordinate amount of time pouring over vintage automotive design and modern restomods. We have seen our fair share of classic American muscle cars completely overhauled for the 21st century, but every so often, a build emerges that completely stops us in our tracks.

If you are a discerning collector seeking the absolute pinnacle of custom automotive craftsmanship, your search might just be over. With the highly anticipated MECUM Glendale 2026 auction rapidly approaching on Saturday, March 21st, the block is about to be graced by an absolute masterpiece: a breathtaking, one-of-a-kind 1968 Ford Mustang Custom Fastback.

Brought to life by the visionary team at Mustang Brothers, this extraordinary vehicle—affectionately known as “The Outlaw”—is not merely a restored classic; it is a meticulously over-engineered work of rolling art.

Having logged a mere 200 test miles since its exhaustive completion, the sheer level of bespoke detail on display here is staggering. The most immediate, jaw-dropping feature is the patent-pending panoramic glass roof.

To accommodate this modern luxury without compromising the chassis, the builders brilliantly strengthened the car with convertible inner rockers prior to cutting the roofline.

Complementing this open-air aesthetic is a beautifully integrated, removable Thunderbird Sports Roadster-style tonneau cover that sits cleanly over the fold-down rear seat, giving the iconic Fastback silhouette an incredibly sleek, aerodynamic profile.

The visual presence of this 1968 Ford Mustang Custom Fastback is nothing short of spectacular. The exterior is flawlessly finished in a shimmering 2022 Brittany Blue metallic, sharply accented by classic Wimbledon White cleared racing stripes.

The builders’ obsessive attention to detail didn’t stop at the visible body panels; the entire undercarriage was custom-painted in the matching exterior color, with the floors painstakingly wet-sanded and hand-buffed to a mirror finish.

This same uncompromising standard was applied to every powder-coated, painted, polished, and cleared component throughout the black-trimmed interior and engine bay.

Speaking of the engine bay, lifting the hood reveals the true heartbeat of this award-winning beast. Power is generated by a monstrous, supercharged 5.4-liter V-8 engine sourced directly from a 2012 Shelby GT500.

This immense, forced-induction power is beautifully managed by a tactile Tremec TR6060 6-speed manual transmission. In a wonderfully quirky and highly bespoke twist, the builders executed a flawless right-hand drive conversion, utilizing a custom-polished rack and pinion setup that had to be specially manufactured and shipped all the way from Australia.

To ensure this immense power actually translates to the tarmac, the chassis has been entirely revolutionized. The ride is dictated by a premium Mustangs to Fear (MTF) suspension system, featuring a C6 front setup, dual adjustable shocks, and an MTF Watts-Link Knock Down rear suspension.

Stiffened by MTF frame rails and putting the power down through a heavy-duty Big Dog 9-inch rear axle with a 3.55 ratio, it handles like a modern track weapon.

Stopping power is equally formidable, courtesy of Wilwood 6-piston calipers biting down on 11.75-inch front and 12.80-inch rear discs, complete with a modern pushbutton electronic parking brake.

It comes as no surprise that this masterclass in custom engineering has utterly dominated the show circuit. Having been proudly displayed at the 2024 SEMA show and featured on PowerNation TV’s “Under The Hood,” it boasts a trophy cabinet that includes the Chicagoland Mustang Club Best of Show, Best in Class at the 2025 Ford Fall Fest, and an astonishing 999/1,000 score to win the Diamond Award at MCACN. When this Brittany Blue titan rolls across the MECUM block on March 21st, it is guaranteed to spark a bidding war.
