German Precision Personified: The DUG Purist Type 2 Watch

There is a small town tucked away in the Ore Mountains of Saxony that holds a mythical status in the world of horology. Glashütte is to German watchmaking what Maranello is to Italian supercars; it is a place where geography acts as a guarantee of quality.

Usually, obtaining a timepiece with “Glashütte” printed on the dial requires an investment equivalent to a small sedan, as the region is home to some of the most prestigious and expensive manufactures on the planet.

However, a modern challenger brand known as DUG (Deutsche Uhrenmanufaktur Glashütte) is democratizing this exclusive club, and their latest release, the Purist Type 2, is a masterclass in accessible luxury and disciplined design.

The DUG Purist Type 2 is exactly what its name suggests: a dedicated, unadorned expression of timekeeping that leans heavily into clarity and proportion. While its predecessor, the Type 1, utilized stark line markers for a severe Bauhaus aesthetic, the Type 2 softens the approach slightly by switching to classic Arabic numerals.

This shift gives the watch a more traditional, instrument-like feel, reminiscent of vintage dashboard gauges or pilot watches, yet it retains a distinctly modern crispness. The dial is clean and balanced, available in Black, White, or Blue, but it is far from boring.

A subtle texture on the dial surface and carefully applied indices catch the light, ensuring that the minimalism doesn’t feel flat or inexpensive. It is a design that rewards closer inspection without shouting for attention across the room.

To carry the Glashütte name, a brand must adhere to a strict legal standard known as the “Glashütte Rule,” which dictates that at least 50% of the watch’s value must be created within the town itself. DUG not only meets these stringent requirements but packages them in an offering that is incredibly compelling for the price.

The Purist Type 2 is built around a three-part stainless-steel case that hits the geometric sweet spot for modern wearability. With a 40mm diameter, a slim height of 10.95mm, and a lug-to-lug distance of 47.5mm, it wears with quiet confidence on a wide variety of wrist sizes. It is robust enough to feel substantial but refined enough to slide easily under a shirt cuff.

Functionality has not been sacrificed for form. The watch features a slightly domed, double anti-reflective sapphire crystal on the front for maximum legibility and a sapphire exhibition caseback on the rear. With a water resistance rating of 100m (10 ATM), this is a true “daily driver” capable of handling everything from the boardroom to a weekend swim.

Visibility in low light is handled by generous applications of BGW9 Super-LumiNova on the hands and indices, providing a cool blue glow that ensures you are never left in the dark. Beating away inside the case is the DUG 400 automatic movement. While based on the reliable Sellita SW400 architecture, this rhodium-plated caliber is finished in Glashütte to meet the brand’s exacting standards.

Through the caseback, you can admire the traditional perlage, bevels, blued screws, and a bespoke rotor that elevates the movement beyond a standard workhorse. It operates at a reliable 4Hz frequency and offers a 40-hour power reserve, delivering modern performance with the charm of old-world mechanical engineering.

Priced at $1,599, the DUG Purist Type 2 represents a value proposition that is increasingly rare in the current market. It offers the pedigree of Saxon watchmaking, a robust 100% mechanical movement, and a versatile design that pairs just as well with a genuine buffalo leather strap as it does with the finely adjustable stainless-steel bracelet. For the enthusiast looking for a piece of authentic German engineering that doesn’t require a second mortgage, the Purist Type 2 is a resounding success.
