Nature Dictates Design: The Breathtaking Casa Tres Pochotes By FAMM Arquitectura

At The Coolector, we have an enduring appreciation for modern architecture that chooses to collaborate with its natural environment rather than conquer it. Too often, contemporary coastal builds bulldoze the landscape to make way for an uncompromising, sterile vision.

Thankfully, the brilliant minds at Costa Rican design studio FAMM Arquitectura have taken the exact opposite approach with their latest residential project. Enter Casa Tres Pochotes, a spectacular 4,736-square-foot (440-square-metre) architectural masterclass located in the lush, tropical setting of Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica.

Set across a pristine two-acre site, this breathtaking home proves that when you let nature dictate the blueprint, the results are nothing short of extraordinary.

The driving force behind the entire project was the undeniable presence of three massive, ancient pochote trees that predated the build. Rather than removing them to create a flat canvas, the architects used these magnificent natural landmarks to completely define the orientation, rhythm, and spirit of the house.

Completed as a deeply personal project for one of the studio’s co-founders, Casa Tres Pochotes was conceptualised to ensure that the ancient timber remains in focus at all times. Every single room is meticulously designed to either look directly out toward the striking trunks or physically wrap around them.

The team brilliantly utilised the massive, sprawling tree canopies to naturally shade the outdoor gathering spaces. Through the use of expansive sliding glass doors, large windows, and deep terraces that perfectly frame the greenery, the property feels organically rooted in its jungle surroundings rather than randomly dropped onto the plot.

When it came to the material palette, FAMM Arquitectura kept things fiercely local, robust, and undeniably handsome, purposefully honouring the lessons of vintage Costa Rican design. The exterior is beautifully clad in local pochote wood siding, a material selected for its natural water resistance and its ability to age gracefully in the humid coastal climate.

Acting as a striking visual anchor, a central white brick volume elegantly offsets the rich, dark tones of the timber. This crisp brickwork perfectly complements the home’s exposed concrete columns, beams, and walls, which inject a profound sense of industrial “strength and simplicity” into the tropical aesthetic.

By relying heavily on local materials, the studio significantly reduced the environmental impact of transportation while keeping the finishes honest and free from unnecessary surface treatments.

This commitment to a raw, durable aesthetic seamlessly transitions into the home’s interior spaces. Stunning teak wood carries effortlessly from the exterior soffits right across the indoor ceilings, continuously drawing the eye outward toward the jungle canopy.

Underfoot, a bold, red-pigmented cementitious urethane flooring adds an unexpected but brilliantly warm pop of colour, beautifully tying the wood, concrete, and glass elements together.

Spatially, the layout is exceptionally clever. The striking white brick central volume serves as a core organising system, cleanly separating the home into two distinct wings that extend outward toward the trees.

The communal spaces, including the living room and expansive terraces, are strategically positioned in the breeziest, most naturally shaded portions of the two-acre site to maximise daily comfort.

Conversely, the private sleeping quarters are perfectly oriented to capture optimal morning light and essential natural ventilation. By embracing deep roof overhangs and strategically placed large openings, Casa Tres Pochotes easily captures vital cross breezes, virtually eliminating the need for artificial cooling.

It is a harmonious, beautifully executed dialogue between modern architecture and the untamed Costa Rican landscape, perfectly tailored to the realities of sophisticated tropical living.
