There is a profound difference between a watch that merely tells the time and a watch that tells a story. At The Coolector, we are always on the hunt for timepieces that push the boundaries of conventional design, and we have just stumbled upon a collaboration that effortlessly blurs the line between horology, military history, and contemporary art.
Enter the Spinnaker Fleuss 40 Automatic Razzle Dazzle Limited Edition Watch, a striking, highly collectable piece of wearable art that pays tribute to one of the most fascinating tactical innovations of the 20th century.

To truly appreciate this watch, you have to understand the history behind its mesmerizing aesthetic. During World War I, the British Navy faced a unique problem: how do you hide a massive warship on the open ocean?

The answer, devised by British artist Norman Wilkinson, was that you don’t. Instead of trying to conceal the vessels, Wilkinson created “Dazzle” camouflage—bold, intersecting geometric patterns painted in high-contrast colours.

The goal wasn’t invisibility; it was optical disruption. The dizzying designs were intended to completely confuse enemy gunners, making it incredibly difficult to judge a ship’s distance, speed, and heading. It was a brilliant fusion of maritime ingenuity and avant-garde art, famously catching the attention of Pablo Picasso, who jokingly claimed the Cubists had invented it.

Fast forward to the present day, and Spinnaker has partnered with renowned British creative Chris Alexander, better known as The Dial Artist, to bring this naval legacy to the wrist. Based in Scotland, Alexander has built a formidable reputation for his intricate, hand-painted watch dials.

For this project, he didn’t just print a pattern; he crafted a meticulous, labor-intensive process to ensure that no two watches in the 500-piece limited production run are exactly alike.

The creation of each dial is a masterclass in patience. The Razzle Dazzle artwork is first designed digitally to form a seamless repeat pattern, which is then vinyl-cut and applied to the dial by hand. After a base of black lacquer is laid down, Alexander applies specialized colour-changing paint in ultra-thin, progressive layers.

This ensures the dial doesn’t become too thick to impede the handset. Once the paint reaches the perfect level of chromatic depth, it is left to cure for several days before the masking is painstakingly removed. The finished result is a unique, 1-of-1 geometric masterpiece that shifts and changes hues depending on how the light hits it.

Of course, a dial this spectacular requires a canvas that can keep up. Underlying the bespoke artwork is the rock-solid dive watch engineering that Spinnaker is known for. The 40mm stainless steel case sits at a highly wearable 11mm thick and is capped with an anti-reflective coated sapphire lens.

With a screw-down crown and a robust water resistance rating of 15 ATM (150 meters), it is built to handle the rigours of the deep just as well as the demands of daily life. Beating away inside is the relentlessly reliable, Japan-made Miyota 9039 automatic movement. This 24-jewel, self-winding workhorse provides a smooth, sweeping seconds hand and is visible through an exhibition caseback.

Priced at just $475, this collaboration represents an astonishing value proposition. You are not just getting a tough, dependable automatic dive watch on a premium 20mm stainless steel bracelet; you are securing a genuinely unique, hand-painted piece of art that commands attention and sparks conversation.
