The Pursuit of Automotive Nirvana: The 1991 Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer ‘HK2’

Here at The Coolector, we spend an inordinate amount of time poring over high-end design, but few things stop us in our tracks quite like a build from Singer Vehicle Design.

To call them “restorations” is, frankly, an insult to the art form. They are “reimaginations”—obsessive, note-perfect distillations of the air-cooled Porsche 911, elevated to a level of fanaticism that borders on the divine. The company’s mantra is “Everything is Important,” and when you see one of their creations, you understand it’s not just a tagline; it’s a religion.

It is, therefore, a significant event when one of these automotive deities becomes available. We are, of course, talking about the 1991 Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer ‘HK2’, which is now being offered for sale by RM Sotheby’s.

This isn’t just any Classic Study. This is ‘HK2,’ a machine with a serious pedigree. As the 14th Classic Study ever completed and only the second built for the Hong Kong market, this is an early and pivotal example of Singer’s craft.

It was completed in the summer of 2015, a time when Singer’s founder, Rob Dickinson, was still personally involved in every single step of the build, from the initial specification discussions to the final delivery. This is a car born from the genesis of the Singer legend.

It’s offered directly from its commissioning owner, a man who clearly has impeccable taste and the foresight to get in before the order books for the Classic Study slammed shut two years ago, marking the end of an iconic era. This isn’t just a car; it’s a meticulously documented piece of automotive history.

The specification sheet for HK2 is a masterclass in considered, timeless style. The exterior is finished in Dolphin Grey, a heritage colour made famous by the Porsche 356, which gives the car a subtle, almost sophisticated menace.

This is accented by ghosted stripes with delicate blue lettering, a theme that carries over to the stunning, blue-painted Fuchs-style wheels. It’s a masterstroke of cohesion. The details are pure automotive jewellery: exposed fuel and oil filler caps, nickel-plated bumperettes, and a grey ceramic-coated exhaust.

This fastidious attention to detail flows seamlessly into the cabin, which is trimmed in a matching, sumptuous blue leather and carpet. The driver is held in place by Recaro sport seats with black-painted seatbacks, facing a classic Becker radio. It even boasts a leather-wrapped roll cage—a perfect blend of motorsport aggression and bespoke luxury.

But a Singer is not built to be a museum piece. It is built to be driven. While HK2 was originally specified with a 3.8-litre engine—the largest available at the time—the owner’s pursuit of perfection wasn’t finished. When he moved from Hong Kong back to England, the car was sent to Singer’s headquarters in Los Angeles, where its heart was upgraded to the now-legendary 4.0-litre specification.

This engine is a howling, air-cooled masterpiece. To ensure it remained a usable travel companion, it was also fitted with an upgraded exhaust system to reduce in-cabin noise.

Mated to a tactile five-speed manual gearbox and riding on high-performance Öhlins adjustable suspension, the car’s setup was then handed over to the wizards at Tuthill, who tuned it specifically for the unique, challenging demands of UK B-roads. This is, quite simply, the ultimate driver’s spec.

Since arriving in the UK, HK2 has been maintained exclusively by Singer’s approved partners and their own UK facilities. Showing less than 3,300 miles since its reimagination, this machine is barely broken in.

Now, it is being offered for sale in a unique partnership between RM Sotheby’s and Singer Vehicle Design, prepared to meet the brand’s ‘Encore’ pre-owned standards and, crucially, offered with a full Singer warranty.

With Classic Study production now ending, the chance to acquire one is vanishingly rare. The opportunity to acquire one with this level of specification, direct provenance, and a 4.0-litre upgrade is almost unheard of.

This 1991 Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer is, in our opinion, the definitive example of air-cooled perfection, and it can be yours for £950,000.
