When it comes to escaping the relentless pace of urban life, few architectural projects capture the essence of a true wilderness retreat quite like the Long Lake House.

Situated on a secluded, motorboat-free peninsula in the rugged Ontario wilderness, this spectacular off-grid cabin is the brainchild of the award-winning team at Dubbeldam Architecture + Design.

The backstory alone is enough to make any outdoorsman jealous: the owners, an urban couple with a profound love for nature, actually spent an entire year camping on the exact plot of land to intimately understand the light, the seasons, and the terrain before laying a single foundation.

The result is a breathtaking, year-round sanctuary that treads lightly on the earth while delivering an uncompromising standard of modern, multigenerational living.
Elevated and Accessible Architecture
To truly respect the natural contours of the site, the architects nestled the lower half of the Long Lake House just below a dramatic ridge of exposed bedrock, essentially concealing it from view upon approach. Instead of a traditional ground-floor entry, the primary access is via a stunning bridge that leads directly to the upper floor.

This wasn’t just an aesthetic choice; it was a crucial, highly functional feature designed to provide seamless accessibility for a family member who uses a wheelchair.

By placing the main communal spaces on this upper level, the design brilliantly fulfills the clients’ vision of a living room that literally “floats above the forest floor,” completely blurring the boundaries between indoors and out.
A Masterclass in Material Warmth
Stepping into the heart of the upper level reveals a sprawling, open-plan living and dining area framed by expansive wrap-around windows and large sliding doors. A striking cast concrete hearth anchors the room, offering a natural gathering point for family and friends.

For those lazy afternoons spent reading or simply staring out at the water, a massive 17-foot-long built-in window bench with integrated storage provides the ultimate vantage point. The kitchen is an exercise in refined, natural simplicity, pairing beautifully crafted white oak millwork with engineered stone counters.

Overhead, a continuous ceiling of oil-rubbed western hemlock boards softens the acoustics and injects a profound sense of tactile warmth into the space.
Deeply Rooted in the Landscape
While the upper floor is all about soaring canopy views, the lower level is intimately grounded in the forest. Five distinct bedrooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows and dedicated exterior entrances, allowing guests to step directly out into the wilderness for absolute privacy.

The west-facing primary suite is a true woodland haven, complete with an ensuite bathroom featuring an outdoor shower—a brilliant, rugged homage to the family’s original camping days.

Furthermore, a fully accessible sixth bedroom and bathroom on the upper level ensures that every single member of the family can experience the magic of the cottage comfortably together.
Uncompromising Off-Grid Sustainability
Here at The Coolector, we always champion great design that actively respects its environment, and the Long Lake House delivers in absolute spades. Built entirely off-grid, the property is powered by a robust solar array and constructed using sustainably harvested, locally milled wood.

The exterior is clad in stealthy greyed cedar and charcoal-stained spruce, allowing the structure to visually recede into the timberline.

Featuring an upper deck with an outdoor wood-burning fireplace and retractable bug screens, plus a naturally cooled lower deck shaded by the bedrock outcropping.

This fully winterized dwelling is far more than a fleeting summer fling. It is a permanent, year-round invitation to slow down and live in perfect sync with the shifting seasons.
