Shinola’s The Mechanic Watch retails for $1450 and aims to honour the understated, tactile experiences of one’s life. This high-quality timepiece is directly inspired by the rich history of sign painters in Detroit, who called themselves “mechanics” and it is a tribute to their precision and talents in showcasing information with clarity and style—not unlike a well-crafted timepiece.
As a result of its throwback design, the Mechanic boasts a domed dial, box crystal, curved hands, and a toothy crown for simple winding. The dial numbers’ shadow, outline, and fill harken to classic sign painting techniques. A case back window shows off the mechanical manual-wind movement. It is finished off with a stylish leather strap, making the Mechanic a truly unique addition to any watch enthusiast’s lineup, with a plucky wind-it-yourself attitude and style to spare.
The hand-wound Swiss-made SW210-1 movement of The Mechanic accurately keeps the hours, minutes, and seconds. It should be manually wound habitually in order to restore the power reserve, which keeps the watch ticking. The Mechanic has an impressive minimum power reserve of 42 hours and the packaging has custom art created by Detroit’s very own Motown Sign Co. This beautiful box opens to reveal a custom metal watch box reminiscent of the boxes sign painters keep their brushes in.
