To mark a decade of crafting immaculate everyday carry gear, New York and Hong Kong-based luggage atelier Stuart & Lau has unveiled its most ambitious release to date: the Stuart & Lau Cary Briefcase Founder’s Edition.

Ten years ago, the brand set out to redefine urban commuter luggage, resulting in the award-winning Cary Briefcase.

To celebrate this milestone, Stuart & Lau has partnered with Chicago’s legendary Horween Leather Company to craft the very first all-leather version of their iconic silhouette.

Priced at £463, this limited-edition release elevates a proven commuter favourite into a true heirloom piece.
Horween Essex Leather & Chicago Heritage
What elevates the Founder’s Edition into horological levels of craftsmanship is its material choice: full-grain Horween Essex leather.

Handmade in Chicago since 1905, Horween is one of the last remaining American tanneries taking hides from raw to finished in-house using small-batch, traditional methods. Essex is vegetable-tanned using natural tree bark tannins in a patient process that took Horween three years to perfect.

Rich in natural oils, Essex leather arrives remarkably supple from day one and only improves with age.

Rather than degrading over time, the full-grain leather absorbs oils, darkens gracefully, and develops a lustrous, custom patina that makes every individual bag uniquely your own. It is a briefcase built not to be replaced, but to be handed down.
Thoughtful Storage & Dual Laptop Architecture
While its exterior exudes mid-century sophistication, the interior is an absolute masterclass in modern, tech-focused organisation. Lined in a recycled khaki Eco-Twill, the main compartment features a fixed suspended sleeve designed to safeguard 16-inch laptops alongside an ingenious removable 15-inch laptop sleeve.

Secured by patented Fidlock quick-release magnetic snaps, the removable sleeve can be lifted straight out to accompany you into meetings solo.
“By wrapping their award-winning commuter architecture in vegetable-tanned Horween Essex leather, Stuart & Lau has turned a daily briefcase into an heirloom-worthy masterpiece.”
The interior organisation continues with a phone pocket lined in screen-protecting soft microsuede, a magnetic leather key ring tab, and a discreet concealed AirTag pocket for total peace of mind during international transit.
Commuter Convenience & Hand-Polished Precision
Every hardware detail on the Founder’s Edition reflects a relentless commitment to quality. The main opening is secured by Japanese YKK Excella® zips—YKK’s highest grade, featuring individually hand-polished teeth for an extraordinarily smooth glide.

Up top, hand-polished nickel hardware adds a clean contrast against the rich brown leather chassis.

Travel functionality is seamlessly integrated throughout. A concealed trolley sleeve on the rear panel glides smoothly over rolling luggage handles without clunky straps, while Stuart & Lau’s signature external umbrella slot keeps you weather-ready on unpredictable morning commutes.

For carrying comfort, the adjustable shoulder strap combines broad full-grain leather padding with a memory-foam core mounted on heavy-duty cotton webbing.
