Zodiac Super Sea Wolf GMT

Hodinkee is home to some of the coolest, most exclusive timepieces on the market and you can add another to that list in the shape of this superb looking Zodiac Super Sea Wolf GMT. For those seeking a great looking, entry level luxury watch, this is sure to tick all of the right boxes and this exclusive colourway is only available through the Hodinkee store.

Zodiac first introduced a couple of watches back in March that harked back to the Aerospace GMT from the 1960s. Both models sold out rapidly, with the blue and orange variant bossing it on social media. After those timepieces found their way to wrists around the world, Zodiac stayed quiet about the potential for future releases utilising other – equally bold and vibrant – colour combinations. Well, we’ve got good news for anyone that missed out the first time around: Zodiac’s GMT is officially back with a brand new colourway featuring a blue and green bezel and you can only get your hands on it through Hodinkee.

Striking Aesthetics

Zodiac have used the same case as the Sea Wolf for the original Aerospace GMT, with the only change being the subbing out of the movement and altering the bezel construction. This top notch timepiece is specced to a full 200 meters of water resistance making it an adventure ready offering and combines both vintage and contemporary elements in its design. This watch even channels the spirit of the original Sea Wolf and Aerospace relationship by featuring “Super Sea Wolf” on the dial. It’s a small touch that showcases the rich history of early innovation by Zodiac.

The Zodiac Super Sea Wolf GMT from Hodinkee is limited to 182 pieces (a nod to the company’s founding year of 1882), and it boasts the same specs to this year’s earlier releases. What is new, however, is the colour of the bezel – and what a difference it offers. The 24-hour bezel is split into two separate tones, one a seafoam green and the other a cobalt blue. It’s a bold and versatile aesthetic that has arrived just in time for this winter weather, but it will also be the ideal companion for escaping the cold this holiday season.

With the GMT function being governed by a matching seafoam green hand that completes a full rotation around the dial once every 24 hours, this is a first class accessory that will bring your wrist to life in 2020. The inverted triangular marker on the bezel, which can be used to track a third time zone, stands out as well in a neutral white colour. While the dials of the previous two GMTs were a glossy black, the dial of this watch has a different tone and immediately catches the eye.

First Class Features

Boasting a well-proportioned case with a diameter of 40mm and a thickness of 13mm which wears a little smaller than it might seem, courtesy of the solid end-links and the absence of crown guards. The dial, despite its unique tint, is extremely legible with faceted, polished markers that are applied and stand tall at each hour. Rectangular lume plots are positioned at the edge of each index, and a white minute track dots between each marker. The blocky hour, minute, and GMT hands are in a classic baton shape, and luminescent material is placed on the tip of the GMT hand and fills the interior of the hour and minute hand.

The crystal of the watch is crafted from sapphire, while the bezel is covered by mineral glass to give off that retro, Bakelite-esque aesthetic. A matching date window, framed by a white square, is placed at three o’clock, and the caseback is closed. The movement used in the GMT represents a departure from Zodiac’s modern Super Sea Wolf archetype. A large majority of Zodiac timepieces make use of calibers from Swiss Technology Production, better known as STP. It is a workhorse in the best sense, the 2893-2 is a crowd-pleasing caliber that offers 42 hours of running autonomy, a beat rate of 4Hz, and a jumping 24-hour hand that can be set independently without hacking the watch.
