Air-Cooled Perfection: 1993 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.8

Among air-cooled Porsche purists, few designations command as much reverence as the 964-generation Carrera RS 3.8. Conceived by Porsche to homologate the formidable 3.8 RSR race car, it stands as one of the rarest, most focused road-going 911s ever to leave Stuttgart.

With a mere 55 examples ever built, finding any Carrera RS 3.8 is a monumental event for collectors.

However, this particular 1993 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.8 offered by RM Sotheby’s—estimated at £950,000+—is arguably the most intriguing and story-rich example in existence.

Drenched in iconic Speed Yellow and boasting single-owner provenance from new, this air-cooled icon pairs extreme homologation engineering with an extraordinary factory secret.

To create the Carrera RS 3.8, Porsche took the already stripped-back 964 Carrera RS and turned the wick up significantly.

Engine displacement was expanded to a 3.8-litre naturally aspirated flat-six, delivering 300 horsepower to the rear wheels via a heavy-duty five-speed manual gearbox and a locking differential.

Riding on legendary 18-inch Speedline split-rim alloy wheels and backed by a massive 92-litre endurance fuel tank, the RS 3.8 was built for serious motorsport performance.

This specific German-market example (“C00” country code) was commissioned directly through famed Porsche Customer Racing Manager and marque historian Jürgen Barth.

Collected by its sole owner at the Weissach factory in March 1994, it has been driven, enjoyed, and diligently maintained for over three decades, racking up a documented 185,440 kilometres on the odometer.

What truly elevates this RS 3.8 above its 54 siblings is an extraordinary custom request made by its original owner.

Wanting to take his children on the school run and to national motorsport meetings, the owner specially requested that factory technicians reinstall rear seats equipped with three-point seatbelts—making this reportedly the only four-seater 964 Carrera RS 3.8 in existence.

“By pairing factory 3.8-litre homologation power with a bespoke four-seat interior, this £950,000+ Speed Yellow 964 stands as a unique masterpiece in air-cooled history.”

Visually, the car is an absolute triumph. The exterior is finished in vibrant Speed Yellow, complemented inside by black leather bucket seats with grey inserts.

In a brilliant touch of factory customisation, the front bucket seat shells, seatbelts, and fabric door pulls are all colour-matched in matching Speed Yellow.

Helmut Pietsch Engine Overhaul & Mechanical Legacy

This 911’s mechanical history is as legendary as its specification. Returned to Porsche headquarters in Stuttgart for inspection on no fewer than nine occasions, the car underwent a ‘zero-tolerance’ engine overhaul supervised directly by Plant 1 Head of Engine Technology, Helmut Pietsch.

The subsequent dyno run recorded an impressive 324 horsepower.
