Jungle Sanctuary: The Linea House by Instinto Estudio

Nosara, Costa Rica, has long been a haven for surfers, wellness seekers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

Nestled deep within the lush Guiones jungle while remaining just moments from the coastline, Linea House by Instinto Estudio stands as a stunning masterclass in modern tropical architecture.

Commissioned by a Canadian family seeking a private retreat to gather with friends without losing their connection to nature, this twin-dwelling project redefines what it means to live alongside the jungle.

* Project Name: Linea House (Two "Sister" Tropical Dwellings)
* Architectural Studio: Instinto Estudio
* Location: Guiones Jungle, Nosara, Costa Rica
* Primary Materials: Local Timber, Terrazzo, Earth Tones & Mosaic Tiles
* Design Highlights: Passive Cross-Ventilation, Deep Cantilevered Eaves, Central Gardens

Architecture Inspired by Surf Culture

The name Línea—meaning “Line”—draws direct inspiration from both the clean horizontal and vertical planes that structure the buildings and the classic surfing ethos of “picking your line” on a wave.

Instinto Estudio translated this coastal philosophy into a physical journey: each architectural line establishes a distinct perspective, carving out a deliberate path through the jungle landscape.

Rather than constructing a single overwhelming compound, the studio designed two independent “sister houses” linked by a shared design language. This clever approach provides two homes with individual character while keeping them united through spatial strategy.

Passive Design Meets Tropical Living

Living in a tropical environment demands a thoughtful response to heat and sudden downpours.

Linea House tackles the climate head-on through smart passive design strategies that drastically reduce reliance on energy-heavy air conditioning systems.

“By utilizing deep cantilevered eaves, strategic voids, and continuous cross-ventilation, Instinto Estudio created a jungle sanctuary that stays naturally cool in the Costa Rican heat.”

Expansive openings and strategically placed voids allow ocean breezes to flow freely through the living areas.

Oversized cantilevered roofs and deep eaves cast generous shade across outdoor living zones, protecting the interiors from harsh solar glare while allowing residents to sit outside and enjoy the view during heavy tropical rains.

Earthy Materials & Organic Interiors

Inside and out, the material choices foster a rich, tactile dialogue with the surrounding forest.

A restrained palette of natural timber, polished terrazzo, and warm earth tones forms the backdrop, while vibrant mosaic tiles introduce playful pops of colour and texture inspired by local flora.

Darker exterior cladding allows the buildings to melt visually into the dense jungle shadows, whereas lighter wood elements highlight the primary structural lines.

Indoors, warm timber surfaces combine with airy open layouts, ensuring that nature remains a constant presence throughout daily life.

A Seamless Connection to Nature

The internal organisation of each house prioritises communal gathering on the ground level.

Open-plan kitchens and lounges step straight out onto shaded terraces and lush courtyard gardens, making indoor-outdoor living entirely effortless.

Upper FloorPrivate Bedrooms Elevated into the Tree Canopy
Outdoor LivingSheltered Cantilevered Patios & Sun Decks

Upstairs, the bedrooms are elevated directly into the tree canopy, offering private sanctuaries complete with treetop views and morning bird calls.

Ultimately, Linea House is far more than just a pair of holiday homes; it is a refined architectural framework that turns daily life in the Costa Rican jungle into a seamless, outdoor-focused experience.
