Magnolia House

There is something about modern pieces of architecture that are built around a feature of some sort that really makes them stand out from the crowd and that is particularly true of Magnolia House. Located in Ecuador and designed by Felipe Escudero, this stunning residential property is positioned at the top of a mountain valley in the Los Arrayanas neighbourhood of Puembo, Ecuador and has some truly stunning design features that we’re loving here at The Coolector.

Magnolia House from Felipe Escudero boasts some 7,535 square feet of living space and has a pleasingly minimalistic vibe that we can all get on board with. This striking one-storey dwelling is positioned around a central courtyard that frames a large magnolia tree placed within a plant-covered patio. It is this tree that serves as the home’s main focal point and a compelling visual impact from almost anywhere in the property.

EYE-CATCHING DETAIL

It’s not every day you see a house that is built around a magnolia tree so it really stands out when you do encounter a piece of design as aesthetically superior as Magnolia House. Described by the architect as looking like a spaceship that has just landed, the large property is topped by a flat concrete slab with vast spans and overhangs – something that provides another grandiose visual impact to the home in Ecuador.

The concrete slab atop Magnolia House is interrupted only by the home’s centrepiece – namely, the magnolia tree – the top of which can be seen sticking out from the central, open-air courtyard. The concrete roof dips to form sloping walls that partially enclose the courtyard, which is entered through glass doors in floor-to-ceiling glass walls which do a superb job bathing the home in an abundance of natural light.

Beyond the central courtyard on the same side of Magnolia House you will find an indoor/outdoor living room that is split between inside and outside areas and partitioned by large sliding doors, which lead to a huge decking area that overlooks a long swimming pool in the lush looking garden of this wonderfully designed home. Understated but undeniably eye-catching, it’s hard not to be impressed with what architect Felipe Escudero has achieved with Magnolia House.
