Mark Powell Map Art

There is something about the aesthetic of maps, particularly the vintage kind, that really resonates with our sensibilities here at Coolector HQ but there is always room to make things more engaging and that’s exactly what talented artist, Mark Powell, has done with his mesmerising series of Map Artwork which uses old maps as the catalysts for breathtaking illustrations that we’re astounded by.

Mark Powell’s Map Art is just one string to his bow and he uses many different things as the basis for his extraordinary drawings but it is the map iterations that we’re loving the most here at The Coolector. This superb series of artwork which makes use of a multitude of different map types such as subway maps, city maps and those of the Northern Hemisphere as the backdrop to some photo realistic drawings.

Stunning Skill

Being entirely bereft of even a modicum of artistic talent here at Coolector HQ, we’re always in awe of those with such talented creative abilities and Mark Powell, and his fantastic collection of map artwork, is a fine example of the sort of thing we fall for so readily. Powell is a Yorkshireman born and bred, though his path into art is a comical one indeed (which involves accidentally enrolling at university), we’re mighty glad he did because this spiffing selection of Map Artwork is some of the best we’ve seen of late.

The excellent Mark Powell Map Artwork takes its inspiration from a number of different artistic styles and artists but Powell name checks the likes of Jean Michel Basquiat, David Hockney, Samuel Bassett, Anthony Micallef and Richard Hamilton as being particularly influential on his work and processes and though we’re only familiar with a couple of names on that list, it’s clear that Powell has also infused his own style into each of these brilliantly realised pieces of map artwork.

If you like your artwork to be a little out of the ordinary and a focal point for a room, this glorious looking Map Art from Mark Powell is certainly going to tick all of the right boxes. Striking and thought provoking, these supremely detailed and eye-catching pieces of artwork have a distinctly vintage vibe that we’re loving and whether you hang them on your wall or display them in your workspace, they are always going to stand out from the crowd.

Antique Artwork

The vintage style is achieved through creating the illustrations, using biro, on vintage antique maps that have been picked up in a variety of places and given a new lease of life through these stunning drawings. Maps have an air of the unknown to them and Powell admits he doesn’t know most of the people that he illustrates atop these maps which adds to this mystery still further.

We love our unusual artwork here at The Coolector and this Map Artwork by Mark Powell unquestionably falls into that bracket. For anyone on the lookout for some striking new additions to their interior design endeavours, you’ll not go too far wrong with these and they definitely get two thumbs up from us.
